The early 1960s folk music movement was built on the flattop 12-string guitar, and in 1963 Rickenbacker created and produced an electric 12-string as a result. Despite previous efforts by various firms (particularly Gibson and Danelectro), the Rickenbacker 12-string electric quickly gained popularity because to its connection to Beatles member George Harrison.

Gross presented F.C. Hall, the proprietor of Rickenbacker, with his useful, simple-to-install converter device in 1966. A 12-string guitar might become a 6-string with this “conversion comb” (or any number in between). When the converter was activated, it removed strings from the player’s right hand and pulled down the required number of strings, leaving the remaining strings for picking. Gross gave a conversion demonstration at the NAMM exhibit in July 1966. In August, a license arrangement was struck, and by winter, the guitars were in production.
Models 336/12, 366/12, and 456/12 were created. The first Rickenbacker ad language stated: “Now, one instrument—the most adaptable guitar ever made—eliminates the need to carry several guitars. Any string combination may be played on the superb Rickenbacker 12-string guitar thanks to a unique, patented converter.
The 1967 366/12 guitar in this image belonged to James Gross. The majority of the characteristics of vintage Deluxe Rickenbacker models from the 1960s are present. There are also two “toaster” single-coil pickups, two gloss-finished rosewood fretboards with huge triangular inlays, a bound maple neck, checkerboard binding on the back, a slash soundhole, and a “R” tailpiece.
The most popular color offered by Rickenbacker, Fireglo, is used to complete this specimen. The chrome converter comb and the additional pickguard behind it, which extends below all 12 strings, are the key distinctions between it and a standard 360/12. $579.50 was the advertised price for 1966. One in perfect original condition is now worth $4,500.
