Later, he worked for Meloway, namely as the distributor for the Yamaki brand of Japanese acoustic guitars.
From January 1974, a price list brochure for Yamaki guitars sold by Meloway was published.

Because of his position at Meloway and his admiration for Yamaki guitars’ high quality, he made the decision to join the adventure of Japanese guitars.
And in 1975, Jerry O’Hagan founded his own import business and started selling Japanese acoustic guitars under the Grande name. But in 1978, he ceased making these imports after three years.
Following the development of the Shark model, he began producing and distributing his own guitars and basses in 1978/1979.
Birth of O’Hagan Guitars!
The Shark is a Gibson model that is similar to the Explorer but has a significantly thinner body, making it more convenient to play, particularly while sitting.

Before starting his own guitar business in 1981, Roger Benedict is known for producing these guitars.
But one of the best tales about the O’Hagan brand happened at Jeff Hill’s business, the Knut Koupée Music Store in Minneapolis.
The encounter between Jeff Hill, Prince, Dave Rusan, a luthier hired by Knut Koupée, and an O’Hagan Shark then Nightwatch guitar is, in fact, where the narrative starts.
These guitars have a special place in the history of 80s and even 90s music since they served as the prototype for Prince’s Cloud Guitar, whose initial iteration was featured in the 1984 film Purple Rain. Buy O’Hagan Nightwatch Special Bass Blueburst USA 1980’s Online.
In a Fret Board Journal story by John Woodland and Gerald Ronning from May 2020 about the sale of Prince’s original Cloud Guitar, Dave Rusan said the following:
“New sides were grafted on after the sides of the Shark’s maple neck-through body construction were removed. While the original bridge pickup rout already had space for the EMG Prince used, the neck pickup humbucker cavity rout was covered with wood in order to be subsequently routed from the back side of the instrument for the smaller, EMG neck pickup. A little portion of the headstock’s wingtip was grafted onto the headstock from a new piece of wood, and the old tuner holes were plugged. Only the first two were constructed using O’Hagan necks, according to Rusan. “After that, I created them all from scratch.” ”
Midway through 1984, Dave Rusan stood in front of the first Cloud Guitar while carrying the unfinished second Cloud Guitar. Keep in mind that the mechanical holes that were drilled during the knockout of the neck pickup have also been sealed in. In other words, an O’Hagan Shark and subsequently an O’Hagan Nightwatch were used to create Prince’s first two Cloud Guitars.
This shows both the appreciation for O’hagan guitars’ excellence and the motivation they were able to inspire in creative luthiers like Dave Rusan. In this instance, a bass guitar is in question rather than a guitar!
This 1980 Nightwatch model was undoubtedly created by Roger Benedict before he left O’Hagan in 1981 to start his own business because of the attention and quality with which it was created.
